Conservation Training for African Partners

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International shares its unique expertise with partners in Rwanda and Congo to build conservation capacity in Africa.

Fossey Fund helps train park guards in Rwanda

Training for conservation partners

Karisoke™ Research Center staff write, and keep updated, a series of training manuals covering all aspects of gorilla behavior, conservation, and biodiversity in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. These are used for education and training of new staff, students, park guards, tourist guides and others. Karisoke also conducts training sessions for park tourist guides from Rwanda. These include topics such as history and biodiversity of the park, gorilla and other primate behavior, ecology and conservation,  Karisoke™/Fossey history, guide interpretation, and more.

Training for national parks and reserves staff

Fossey Fund staff provide training in biodiversity conservation for national park authorities from Rwanda and Congo. In Congo, we train staff of the Maiko National Park, which has received essentially no international support since it was created in 1970.  We conduct training sessions similar to those in Rwanda to teach park staff about the biodiversity of the region and techniques for monitoring and inventorying biodiversity.
