Sir David Attenborough Lends Voice to Gorilla Documentary

Wildlife broadcasting legend, Sir David Attenborough, has recorded the voiceover for a new documentary about the plight of mountain gorillas in Rwanda

The short film, entitled "Hope," goes behind the scenes at the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda – 46 years after Dian Fossey began her pioneering conservation work with the mountain gorillas. Decades of "extreme conservation" have seen the gorilla population almost double in a country that is now on the road to recovery following years of political unrest. However, the number of mountain gorilla remains dangerously low and they still face the threat of extinction.

Sir David Attenborough, an advocate for the work of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, has given his support to the film and hopes his involvement will encourage others to join the Craghoppers campaign. He said:

“The number of mountain gorillas had become so depleted in Rwanda by the late 1960s that extreme measures were needed to protect the remaining population and allow it to increase. The work at the Volcanoes National Park by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is intensive, difficult and sometimes dangerous – but it absolutely must continue, if we are to protect this species of great ape – which is still critically endangered.

“The film 'Hope' will once again bring to light the fragile existence of the mountain gorillas and the work that goes into protecting them. By watching and sharing this very important film you will be helping the people, saving the gorillas.”

Produced by outdoor clothing brand, Craghoppers, and award-winning filmmaker Peter McBride, "Hope" will be available to view online at www.craghoppers.com starting April 9.

Managing Director for Craghoppers, Jim McNamara, said: “The aim of the film was to generate awareness. Having Sir David’s voice and seal of approval will undoubtedly encourage more people to engage with the documentary – so we are absolutely over the moon to have him on board.”

The premiere of the film "Hope," will take place at Google headquarters in London on April 8.  It will feature a live Google hangout with special guests from across the globe.
