Damien Caillaud, Ph.D.
Damien Caillaud researches mountain gorilla social behavior, ecology and demography. He develops statistical models to analyze data collected on the mountain gorillas studied since 1967 by the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda. He is based at the Fossey Fund's headquarters in Atlanta, and is also affiliated with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Section of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin.
Initially trained as a veterinarian, he has been studying primates since 2003 and received his Ph.D. on western lowland gorillas at the University of Montpellier. He then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany and at the University of Texas at Austin. He has done field work on wild primates in the Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Uganda and Madagascar.
