One of the Fossey Fund's anti-poaching camps near Volcanoes National Park was attacked on Dec. 2. A ranger was fatally shot and the camp looted. Other staff are safe, and trackers will resume their work Dec. 4.

A new census of the mountain gorillas who live in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has shown an increase from 302 in 2006 to 400. Fossey Fund staff participated in this census.

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced today a $25,000 cash donation to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, becoming an official sponsor for the second consecutive year. Corning’s donation will support the organization’s ongoing efforts to monitor and protect gorillas and their habitats in Africa.

The recent rescue of two more infant Grauer’s gorillas by Congolese wildlife authorities (ICCN) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) shows that illegal gorilla trafficking is still a critical threat to this highly endangered species. The two gorillas are in temporary care of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, at an ICCN facility, awaiting release to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) center.

Karisoke trackers reported seeing two juvenile mountain gorillas and a blackback dismantling poachers' snares. Silverbacks and an elder female had been known to do this, but this is a first for juvenile gorillas.
