William R. Foster, D.V.M.
William R. Foster has been the president and CEO of the Birmingham Zoo since 2004. While under Foster’s direction, the Birmingham Zoo completed the Junior League of Birmingham-Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo in April 2005, an anchor children’s exhibit devoted to urban, rural and wild animals and Alabama animals. Most recently, Foster has unveiled plans for a major 14-acre showcase for African beasts and birds to be called Trails of Africa, which is expected to open by 2011.
Foster is a former president of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Prior to the Birmingham Zoo, Foster was president and executive director of the Louisville Zoo.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from the University of South Florida and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Bachelor of Science degrees from Tuskegee University.
