Two new infants doing well in Mafunzo's group

One of the newest-formed groups followed by the Fossey Fund is led by silverback Mafunzo. It was formed in 2014 when Mafunzo gained two females, and increased in 2015 when some remaining members of another group joined him after losing their silverback.

In 2015, we celebrated the births of two infants in the group. First was an infant born to mother Taraja, on July 19. The second birth was by mother Nzeli, who was observed with her newborn on Sept. 15, bringing the number of gorillas in the group to 10.

Young leader Mafunzo, 15, had some difficulties in starting and keeping the group stable in terms of its range, location and interactions with other groups during its first year in existence, so we are happy to see that these newborns have arrived and that they are their mothers are doing well!
